Windows only: If your primary hard drive just isn’t large enough to hold all the you need on a day-to-day basis, then Steam Mover is the perfect tool for the job—assuming you have another drive handy.

Steam Mover was originally designed to help hardcore gamers move their downloaded games to other drives, in order to free up space on their primary hard drive. Cheap, huge drives came along and made this less necessary. With the more recent emerging popularity of Solid State Drives (SSDs), this need becomes commonplace again.
Steam Mover works amazingly well on games downloaded through the Steam client (which it was designed for), but as it turns out, it works well with other applications, too. The program’s target directory defaults to the applications folder for Steam, but simply change this to the folder containing the applications you wish to move. Once the folder is selected, all of the associated programs will be listed. Steam Mover works by moving all the data in the associated folder to your secondary drive; it then simply makes a link to the new folder you designate for the alternative folder. This means it should work on most applications.

Once you’ve got the target and destination folder selected, simply select the program(s) you would like to move. Click the right arrow at the bottom of the application, and soon the selected applications will be on the other drive. You can always move the application back to the original drive by clicking the left arrow.
It is important to note that this software is an initial release. The developer makes no guarantee that it will work flawlessly outside of transporting Steam games. In my testing, however, it worked very well, except for a small hiccup when transferring Illustrator and Flash Builder. The issue was easily resolved by copying everything in my new folder back into the original folder, however.
Steam Mover is a free download for and Vista. XP is not supported.

Windows only: Desktop customization application Rainmeter updates again, adding a new default skin, theme packaging tools, and full support for —including multiple monitor support.

The new default skin replaces Enigma as the default, but if you’re a fan of the Enigma desktop customization you’ll be happy to know it’s still included. Rather than rehash all of the new features, here’s the most important ones from the announcement page:

Rainmeter now includes a new default suite of skins: Gnometer by Poiru. Gnometer is a colorful and exciting alternative to the default Enigma suite. It contains skins which show off with all the information you could want on your desktop, and is fully configurable by the user with an easy to use settings tool.

Rainmeter 1.2 introduces Rainstaller and the .rmskin format. This utility makes it much easier to distribute and install skins and suites. Rainstaller allows skinners to include addons, fonts and themes along with their skins in a single .rmskin package. Skins and suites are then installed by the user with just a double click or directly from a download site in their browser.

Rainmeter 1.2 has a host of improvements to better support Windows 7. Fully configurable support for multiple monitors has been added, so you can position and save your Rainmeter setup in your multiple monitor environment. Rainmeter 1.2 now supports having your skins stay on the screen if desired when Windows 7′s “Show Desktop” is used.

A new RainBackup utility is included, so users can save their entire setup as a Rainmeter .rmskin file, making moving your setup to a different computer or recovering from a system crash / reinstall much easier.

Rainmeter 1.2 now supports having both the program and the skins / settings stored on network shared drives using UNC paths like “\\SERVER\FolderName”.

Readers should note that this release fixes one of the long-standing problems with Rainmeter—now when you use the Show Desktop feature in Windows 7, there’s an optional feature to make Rainmeter stay on the desktop. Rainmeter is a free download for Windows only.

Windows only: Soluto bills itself as an “Anti-Frustration ”, and it’s not hard to see why—it tracks all the applications in your system boot process, and tells you exactly which ones are slowing you down.

Once you’ve installed the software and rebooted your PC, Soluto springs into action, tracking every single process that runs during the boot process, and then allows you to easily drill down into the list of processes to see exact times for each one. To make it easier for the layman to understand what processes can be removed, the applications are grouped into “No-brainer” or “Potentially removable” groups.

The graph next to the buttons shows you what other users did, so if you really have no idea what something is, you can use the wisdom of the crowd—though we’d like to point out if you really aren’t sure, you might want to Google it first, or ask a more geeky friend.

Clicking the Read more link next to the application name will bring you to a screen that shows even more details about a process, including the process name, what percentage of Soluto users have it installed, and a lot more information.

Other than tracking your boot process, you can also enable tracking while you are running your PC, which will allow Soluto to try and identify more problems with system slowdowns, compatibility, and other issues. You can choose the “My PC Just Frustrated Me” option, which will pop up a screen with some suggestions on what applications might be the cause, and send the report to Soluto—though you won’t immediately see any results from doing so.

According to our conversations with Roee Adler from Soluto, the software will always be free for end-users. Soluto’s application does send some information about your PC back to Soluto’s servers in order to analyze your system, but they assured us that it was limited strictly to data about the processes, drivers, and system components, and no personal information is transmitted or kept anywhere.

Soluto is a free download for Windows only, and definitely worth a look if you’d like to troubleshoot your system boot speed issues.
